2010 HWC Australia Day Competition

Results of the 2010 HWC Australia Day Competition are now available to view online. Please visit the statistics page if you wish to see them. Many thanks go to all the club volunteers who helped make the day a success and also to our guest lifters, especially those from the Adelaide Weightlifting Club.

Congratulations to Vannara Be

Congratulations go to Vannara Be for his outstanding performance at the 2009 Hawthorn Weightlifting Club Championships which saw him join Corran Hocking, Francois Etoundi, Simplice Ribouem, Daniel Koum and Seen Lee as HWC members in 2009 to achieve an "Elite" standard.

Congratulations go to Josh Quinn for his outstanding performance at the 2009 Hawthorn Weightlifting Club Championships which saw him join set new VWA Schoolboy and HWC Under 20 records for the Snatch, Clean and Jerk and Total in the 105Kg category.

Hawthorn Weightlifting Club Championships 2009 Report

HWC World Weightlifting Championships Results

At the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships, Hawthorn had four lifters representing the club and our country. Their results are as follows

Daniel Koum: 113Kg Snatch, 147Kg Clean & Jerk for a 260Kg Total, placing 26th, 19th and 22nd respectively in the 62Kg class.

Francois Etoundi: 125Kg Snatch, 152Kg Clean & Jerk for a 277Kg Total, placing 17th, 17th and 15th respectively in the 69Kg class.

Simplice Ribouem: 146Kg Snatch, 187Kg Clean & Jerk for a 333Kg Total, placing 17th, 14th and 15th respectively in the 85Kg class.

Corran Hocking: 173Kg Snatch, 195Kg Clean & Jerk for a 368Kg Total, placing 10th, 16th and 16th respectively in the 105+Kg class.

It is also worth noting that the head coach for the Australian team was Hawthorn's Yurik Sarkisian. Current club Treasurer Sam Coffa served as President of the Jury throughout much of the championships and Pedro Sanchez was one of the IWF Technical Controllers for the competition.

Vannara and Socheata Be attain Australian citizenship

Congratulations go to Vannara and Socheata Be for attaining Australian citizenship on Thursday November 19. This now makes them eligible to represent Australia, an opportunity they have been deprived of for many years. The club is now looking forward to have two more of our athletes challenging for positions on future Australian teams. Go to the "Multimedia" page to view a photo.

HWC Members selected for 2009 World Championships, Goyang City, Korea

Congratulations to the following HWC members who have been selected to represent Australia at the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships, to be held in Goyang City, Korea.

Daniel Koum: 62Kg category

Francois Etoundi: 69Kg category

Simplice Ribouem: 85Kg category

Corran Hocking: 105+Kg category

Seen Lee: 63Kg category

Yurik Sarksian: Head coach, Male team

It is also worth nothing that of the seven Australian athletes selected to compete, five come from HWC, once again showing the class of our elite athletes.

Yurik Sarkisian appointed Male Head Coach, Commonwealth Games 2010

Congratulations are in order for Yurik Sarkisian, who has been appointed Head Coach for men for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Congratulations Yurik.

HWC results from Commonwealth Senior & Junior Championships

Results from HWC members representing Australia at the 2009 Commonwealth Senior and Junior Championships are as follows:

David Sarkisian: Silver medal (77Kg) with lifts of 130Kg and 156Kg for a 286Kg total

Jacquie White: Unfortunately could not register a Snatch but did complete her Clean & Jerks, finishing with 95Kg

Belinda Van Tienen: Silver medal (75Kg) with lifts of 86Kg and 108Kg for a 194Kg total.

Nick Milankovic competes at 2009 World Master's Games

Congratulations are extended to club Vice President Nick Milankovic for his results in the World Master's Games on November 15. Nick, under the guidance of coach Peter Ikosidekas, finished fourth in his respective age/bodyweight category, finishing with lifts of *0Kg in Snatch and 115Kg in the Clean & Jerk to register a 195Kg total. Well done Nick!

HWC Members selected to represent Australia

Congratulations go to Belinda Van Tienen, Jacquie White, David Sarkisian, Vannara Be and Socheata Be for being selected to represent Australia at the 2009 Commonwealth Senior and Junior Championships. Congratulations also go to coach Anthony Dove for being appointed Male team coach. Congratulations and good luck to all.

2009 National Junior Championships and Senior Invitational Event

The weekend beginning Friday September 18 brought with it the 2009 Australian Under 16 Tournament and 2009 Youth and Junior National Championships. Although only one of our Senior lifters registered a total, such occurrences are to be expected given the "nothing to lose" nature of the Senior invitational competition. In the Junior competition, the following results were obtained.

Reachny Be: 4th overall in the Under 16 Tournament, run on a points system

Socheata Be: Silver in the 53Kg class (Under 20) and 2nd highest Sinclair overall, beaten narrowly and improving on her best total.

Steve McConnell: Gold in the 77Kg class (Under 18) and Silver in the Under 20 division, improving on his best lifts.

Paulo Magistrado: Gold in the 85Kg class (Under 18) inproving to record his first ever 200Kg total.

Josh Quinn: Unfortunately did not register a total after missing his Snatch attempts.

2009 Hawthorn Weightlifting Club Alby Dutton Memorial Cup Record Breakers

Special congratulations are extended to our 3 record breakers at the 2009 Alby Dutton Memorial Cup, Belinda Van Tienen, Nick Milankovic and Vivian Lee. Vivian set a new Female Open Age VWA record in the 48Kg class with a Snatch of 68Kg and Belinda created new VWA benchmarks in the 75Kg Open Age Female category with a Snatch of 89Kg and a total of 197Kg. Nick Milankovic was the third record-breaker of the day, lifting 116Kg in the Clean & Jerk to set a new AWF Master's record in the 105Kg division. Not content with that, coach Peter Ikosidekas upped the weight to 121Kg and Nick completed a fine lift, a massive PB and another record. Well done to all our record breakers!

HWC Members to be competing at upcoming competitions

Congratulations are extended to the many HWC personnel selected to compete at upcoming competitions. Firstly, congratulations to Nick Milankovic for his selection to represent Australia at the World Master's Games. Congratulations also go to our Junior athletes selected to represent Victoria at the 2009 National Age Championships, these being Reachny Be, Socheata Be, Paulo Magistrado, Josh Quinn and Steve McConnell. Further congratulations are extended to Vannara Be, David Sarkisian, Belinda Van Tienen, Jacquie White and Vivian Lee who have been invited to an invitational competition for Senior athletes to grant an opportunity to qualify for the 2009 World Championships. Well done to all our athletes.

It goes without saying that all this could not be possible without the support of the 3 HWC coaches, Anthony Dove, Peter Ikosidekas and Yurik Sarkisian who will be supporting their athletes at the various events listed above. Thank-you coaches!

Another huge day of lifting was had on Saturday July 18 at the 2009 Australian Senior Championships. Hawthorn was well represented and was certainly the best represented club in the country, in fact, HWC had more athletes lifting than any other state had representing them! Josh Quinn sets new VWA benchmarks

Congratulations are extended to Josh Quinn for breaking two Victorian Schoolboy records at the recent School League event held on June 26. Josh succeeded in Snatching 110Kg and earned a total of 242Kg to break these records in the 105Kg division.

2009 Victorian Senior & Junior Championships

Arafura Games & Oceania Championships Success

Congratulations are extended to Francois Etoundi for breaking the Australian Snatch record in the male 69Kg division at the recent Oceania Senior Championships and Arafura Games. The Hawthorn Weightlifting Club congratulates its members who performed well at the recent Oceania Senior and Junior Championships and Arafura Games. To see photos from these championships visit the "Multimedia" page. Hawthorn results are...

  • Daniel Koum- 6 out of 6 attempts for successes with 114Kg and 146Kg in the 62Kg bodyweight category to comfortably win Gold and start the club's lifters off well.

  • Seen Lee- Successful with 85Kg Snatch, narrowly missing 90Kg and 94Kg, before Clean and Jerking 102Kg, a misloaded 108Kg (actually 103Kg), before missing an ACTUAL 108Kg and withdrawing in the women's 63Kg bodyweight category, easily winning Gold however

  • Francois Etoundi- 6 out of 6 successful attempts finishing with an Australian record 131Kg in Snatch and 164Kg in Clean and Jerk to narrowly defeat Mark Spooner for Gold in the 69Kg bodyweight category.

  • Steve McConnell- Successful with 107Kg in Snatch and 125Kg in Clean and Jerk to narrowly defeat Daniel Katz for Gold in the 77Kg Junior category. Steve also managed to damage the platform with a terrible Jerk on 127Kg.

  • Simplice Ribouem- 3 out of 3 Snatches for a PB 151Kg and an easy Clean & Jerk on 190Kg, narrowly missing the Jerk on a mammoth 200Kg. Simplice also managed to force the competition into the warm-up room after the main competition platform refused to support further lifting after his huge lifts!

  • Josh Quinn- Lifting in the warm-up room, adjusted well to complete lifts of 102Kg in Snatch, narrowly missing 105Kg behind and 122Kg in Clean & Jerk before missing 128Kg as he had to resort to a full clean

Congratulations go to all these athletes, however, particular mention must be made to Josh Quinn, Daniel Koum, Francois Etoundi and Simplice Ribouem as they achieved such a high standard in their first competition representing Australia. Special mention also goes to Yurik Sarkisian and Anthony Dove who coached these and other Australian athletes to a very high standard.

Arafura Games & Oceania Championships Selection Success

The Hawthorn Weightlifting Club extends its congratulations to two of its coaches, Yurik Sarkisian and Anthony Dove, who have been selected to coach at the forthcoming 2009 Oceania Weightlifting Championships and 2009 Arafura Games. Yurik has been selected as the Head Coach of the Senior Team, whilst Anthony has been selected as a coach of the Junior Team. Congratulations Yurik and Anthony

HWC Personnel elected to the IWF

The Hawthorn Weightlifting Club recognises the achievements of former club lifters and current club members Sam Coffa and Pedro Sanchez. Both men were recently elected to positions within the IWF. Sam was re-elected as a Vice-President, which will see him extend his current 20 years as an IWF official. Meanwhile, Pedro was elected to the IWF technical committee. Congratulations Sam and Pedro!

HWC success at the 2009 AWF Club Championships

The Hawthorn Weightlifting Club is proud of its member's achievements at the recent AWF Club Championships, held March 28th and 29th in Ipswich, Queensland. Overall, HWC took home both the Senior Male and Junior Male team titles, and was incredibly unlucky to miss out on the Senior Female and Overall Team Titles. Congratulations to all!

At the Club Champiosnhips, 5 athletes achieved the AWF "Senior Elite" Standard, whilst a further athlete achieved "Senior International" standard. These athletes were:

    Vannara Be (56Kg Men): Achieved Senior International

    Daniel Koum (62Kg Men):Achieved Senior Elite

    Francois Etoundi (69Kg Men): Achieved Senior Elite

    Simplice Ribouem (85Kg Men): Achieved Senior Elite

    Corran Hocking (105+Kg Men): Achieved Senior Elite

    Seen Lee (63Kg Women): Achieved Senior Elite

Congratulations go to these athletes for their fantastic achievements. Their skill and dedication to the sport is demonstrated not only by their performances, but also as only one other lifter in the entire country was able to match the standards they set. Well done to all!
